VETERANS AFFAIRS - Individual Unemployability Benefits (TDIU) -  VA Individual Unemployability (TDIU) benefits allow veterans who cannot work due to service-connected disabilities to receive compensation at the 100% disability rate, even if their combined disability rating is less than 100%.

 

What it is:
Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU) is a special benefit offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

 
Who is eligible:
Veterans who are unable to secure or maintain "substantially gainful employment" due to their service-connected disabilities may be eligible for TDIU benefits. 


How it works:
TDIU allows veterans to receive compensation at the 100% disability rate, even if their combined disability rating is less than 100%. 


Substantially gainful employment:
This refers to full-time employment that provides a wage greater than the poverty level. 


Eligibility Requirements:

  • One disability rated at 60% or more . 
  • Multiple disabilities with a combined rating of 70% or more, with at least one disability rated at 40% or more . 

 

Evidence Requirements:

  • You must have evidence of at least one service-connected disability that meets the above scheduler requirements. 
  • You must prove the service-connected disability or disabilities alone prevent getting or keeping substantially gainful employment. 

 

Does not include any filing fees.
